The New York Foundling (the “Foundling”) is one of the oldest, largest and well-respected human services agencies in New York. The Foundling is dedicated to creating a community where each child, youth and adult enjoys the safe, stable and support relationships needed to reach his or her full physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual potential. NYF focuses its efforts on child welfare, and the developmentally disabled. We have over 1300 employees located in every borough of New York City, Westchester and Rockland Counties and in Puerto Rico.

By July 1, 2014, the Foundling will open a temporary emergency shelter for unaccompanied alien children (UAC) in custody of the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement. The Foundling will provide 29 shelter beds for male children between the ages of 12-17, in two cohorts according to age, at its Manhattan location in the Chelsea neighborhood. We have opportunities for Teachers, Teaching Assistants, and an Educational Coordinator in this UAC program and encourage all interested candidates to apply immediately. All candidates must be bilingual (English-Spanish).

Responsibilities and Requirements of Teachers:

  • Provide direct education instructions to one cohort of youth.
  • Maintain sensitivity to the culture of each youth.
  • Focus educational interventions on the initial outcomes of educational assessment conducted when each youth is admitted to the program.
  • All Teachers must be bilingual (English-Spanish).
  • Must have Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Valid NYS teaching certificate, strongly preferred.

Responsibilities and Requirements of Teaching Assistants:

  • Assist Teachers and Educational Coordinator in providing education lessons for all youth in the UAC program.
  • Monitor youth participation to ensure adequate instruction and assistance with each individual.
  • Provide vocational services during the day and extend each youth’s individual learning.
  • All Teaching Assistants must be bilingual (English-Spanish).
  • High school diploma or GED required; some college preferred.

Responsibilities and Requirements of Educational Coordinator:

  • Directly oversee Teaching Assistants and assist the Teacher in providing educational services to all youth in the UAC program.
  • Provide direct services to one cohort of youth and monitor youth participation to ensure adequate instruction and assistance to each individual.
  • Administer educational assessment to determine the functioning level of each youth.
  • Prepare the individualized educational plan for each youth.
  • The Educational Coordinator must be bilingual (English-Spanish).
  • Must have Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Valid NYS teaching certificate, strongly preferred.
  • Must have relevant supervisory and assessment experience.
