Sports & Arts in Schools Foundation (SASF) is New York’s leading provider of after-school programs. Our mission is to help bridge the academic performance gap among under-achieving students and in low income neighborhoods through wholesome, skill-building activities designed to improve children’s academic performance, health and wellness, attitude towards school, self-confidence, character and values, and opportunity for lifelong employment.

Tutors supervise a group of children in the Sports and Arts in Schools Foundation programs. Tutors also participate in activities and trips while providing and maintaining a safe working environment. They help with homework and prepare students to demonstrate newly acquired skills in Sports and Arts. Our programs typically run from 3-6pm during the week and we often have opportunities throughout the 5 boroughs. Not all sites run M-F.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible
  • Organize, lead, and promote the students interest and participation in the activities offered by the program
  • Provide academic support, homework guidance, assistance, and supervision to students
  • Greet new arrivals to the program, introducing them to other students, explaining rules, and encouraging participation
  • He/she fosters an atmosphere of fun and learning and serves as a role model to youth, always conducting him/herself in the utmost professional manner and maintaining appropriate boundaries
  • Promotes positive character development in all youth

Required skills:

  • Must be responsible, reliable and punctual!
  • Must have passion for SASF mission and demonstrated interest in the field of education and youth development.
  • Requires strong academic skills in Math and English as well as knowledge of the New York State standards and test preparation.
  • We are open on most school holidays so the successful candidate will be someone that is flexible and available to work on such days as needed.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required
  • Well organized, able to work both independently and collaboratively
Requirements Qualifications:

  • Experience working or volunteering with youth in a classroom, after school, or community based environment.
  • HS Degree required for work in a Middle or HS. For college students, candidates must have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0. Students working on obtaining Teaching Certification preferred.
  • Able to work late afternoons and/or evenings. After-School hours can span from 2:30pm-5:30pm, with most programs running from 3-6pm.
  • Must pass pre-employment background investigation including but not limited to employment history and criminal background check
