Position Announcement:

Professor seeks doctoral/masters candidate/s to assist in data collection/ data analysis for a multi-year ethnographic study entitled Teachers as Policy-makers, currently funded through the Spencer Foundation. Graduate students in anthropology, sociology, urban studies, urban education, language and literacy in education, sociolinguistics, TESOL & Bilingual Education, the learning sciences, and policy studies are encouraged to apply. Time commitment is estimated at 8 hours per week. The position is available now through June 2015, with possibility of renewal through December 2015.

In addition to a stipend and travel funds, the research assistant will be eligible for professional development opportunities, including: (a) opportunities experiment with/ learn about a variety of qualitative data collection forms and analysis techniques (e.g., videocued ethnography, comparative and multi-sited ethnography, discourse analysis); (b) mentorship and opportunities to present research findings at professional meetings and conferences; and (c) mentorship and opportunities to learn the academic writing and publishing process, including opportunities for authorship credit on any manuscripts submitted as a result of the research.

Required Qualifications:

• Able to conduct observations and create records (e.g., transcriptions, field notes, jottings, video records) of those observations at a high school in Manhattan on Mondays from 1:00-4pm.

• Evidence of interest in equity-driven & critical scholarship, and research that privileges the perspectives and commitments of community members, youth, and teachers.

• Available to work through June 2015.

Desired Qualifications:

• Able to record oral talk or conduct interviews in any of the following languages: Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, French, or Bengali.

• Prior experience working on qualitative or ethnographic research projects, prior training in writing field notes.

• Ability to successfully work independently, and in a research-team environment.

• Understanding of the current political environment related to issues of education reform and education policy.

• Understanding of the current political environment related to issues of immigration reform and immigration policy.
