Chinese American International School seeks a Lower School Chinese Teacher (full-time, exempt position)

The Chinese American International School (CAIS) is an independent, PreK-8th grade school in San Francisco, CA. CAIS was founded in 1981 with an enrollment of just ten students; CAIS now enrolls nearly 500 students from PreK through 8th grade. The Position
The Lower School Chinese Teacher is responsible for teaching duties, by demonstrating teaching competence, an affirming attitude toward the school, a willingness to accept positive criticism, and a professional demeanor and integrity. This position supports the educational program by challenging, supporting and engaging students and meeting academic expectations of the school, discipline, and grade. As a Chinese teacher, all communications with students are to be conducted in Mandarin only.

Essential Functions (not limited to):
 Successfully teach all assigned classes in accordance with grade appropriate best practices
 Use only Chinese language with students. Exceptions are safety, behavior or emotional issues occurring with a child who is not understanding the Chinese teacher instructions.
 Create a positive classroom community in which all children feel valued.
 Encompass a positive discipline approach in guiding student behavior.
 Develop a positive intellectual, emotional and social climate within the classroom.
 Encourage interest in and knowledge of Chinese culture.
 Develop learning experiences that meet the students’ varying needs and interests based upon the intelligent thinking skills of reasoning, persistence and flexibility.
 Personally adhere to and publicly enforce school rules. Report immediately major student misbehavior to the Lower School Director.
 Manage and student behavior in accordance with best practices.
 Assist with projects in specific disciplines, including curriculum and planning, and actively support school functions, such as Lower School events, dramatic and musical productions, and arts exhibits.
 Assist with the recruitment, evaluation and orientation of students new to CAIS.
 Work collaboratively and maintain standards of respect, courtesy, and mutual consideration with the school community, including students, staff, and parents
 Serve on faculty committees as needed.
 Meet responsibilities and deadlines in the classroom and of the school (e.g., grades, and progress reports).
 Communicate with parents: return phone calls, emails and notes in a timely manner.
 Plan and assess using the Common Core Standards.
 Maintain accurate and complete academic reports that provide a cumulative record of student performance. Prepare evaluations, grades and progress reports according to prescribed procedures and deadlines.
 Implement and integrate technology into curriculum.
 Attend faculty and division meetings including required meetings/events before the beginning of, during and after the conclusion of the school year.
 Set clear, concise and coherent lesson plans that involve intelligent thinking skills and real life application.

Required Qualifications:
 Bachelor’s Degree
 Bilingual: Mandarin/English (with native or near native Mandarin fluency)
 Understanding of social and emotional learning strategies
 Technical/Computer skills as required for job performance
 Initial and continued tuberculosis clearance
 Initial and continued criminal background clearance by DOJ, FBI, and Child Abuse Index (CACI)
 CPR and First Aid Certification

Desired Qualifications:
 Minimum: 2 years teaching experience.
 Teaching credential, Masters Degree in Education or equivalent
 Experience teaching in diverse communities
 Experience with curriculum development
 Work experience and familiarity of independent school
