Director of School Culture

YWCA of the City of New York is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. The Director of School Culture is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe and caring environment for students and oversees the implementation of community building initiatives. The Director of School Culture collaborates with school based YW Out-of-School director and reports directly to the Managing Director of Out of School Time Initiatives. Key attributes of a successful Directoris the ability to manage complex and detailed tasks simultaneously; effectively integrate program philosophy and management policies consistent with organization’s mission and goals; to utilize of analytical skills and creativity to develop and implement program initiatives; and the ability to work collaboratively and independently as necessary with key stakeholders and partnering organizations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and secure appropriate arts and academic enrichment programming to promote youth leadership civic engagement, and well-being
  • Oversees the implementation of anti-bullying, conflict resolution, student equity projects and community building initiatives
  • Lead school-wide community efforts to promote tolerance, non-violent conflict resolution improve intergroup relations and school experiences for all students
  • Train all YW staff, school staff and PTA on anti-bullying models
  • Manage school violence prevention staff and ensure all YW staff model respectful interactions, tolerance and demonstrate caring and consistent behavior toward youth
  • Oversee grants administration required by contracts including evaluation, grant reporting, budgets and Human Resources documentation
  • Ensure the proper documentation and assessment of students’ academic, and behavioral performance
  • Track, monitor and document student attendance data and progress in agency database
  • Ensure staff availability and accountability to parents and students
  • Coordinate a comprehensive parent engagement strategy including; communication methods, parent workshops, meetings, and opportunities for parental participation in program activities and events
  • Track program budget expenditures
  • Hire, train and supervise staff with input from the Managing Director of Out of School Time Initiatives and senior managers
  • Develop strong relationships with school staff and faculty to promote student success
  • Collaborate with other program staff on agency, and program-wide projects
  • Champion YWCA anti-racist and anti-sexist philosophy within the after school program
  • Coordinate and conduct on going student recruitment and retention activities
  • Articulate the organization’s mission and programmatic goals to program staff, school and community partners
  • Fulfilling all other duties deemed vital to the function of the organization
  • Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred 3- 5 years of experience working in an elementary school environment Experience facilitating and developing experiential learning programs Ability to build relationships with key stakeholders Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills Solid computer skills; Microsoft Office Suite, internet research and outcome database Bilingual (Spanish or other) preferred Strong work ethic and professional values Commitment to promoting YWCA’s social justice mission, educational and youth development philosophy.
