Global Language Project (GLP) is a not-for-profit organization that partners with public elementary schools to create and fund after school language programs. At Global Language Project our goal is to build the foundation for a lifetime of language learning.

About the Position

Currently, we have the opportunity for one after-school Mandarin teacher. The instructor will work with students in 6th grade at a school in Washington Heights on afternoon a week from 2:50-3:50pm, and with students in 3rd through 5th grades at a school in Hamilton Heights two afternoons a week from 3:00-4:00pm. There will also be an average of four activities throughout the school year (e.g., field trip, career day) that will end around 6:00pm, and the teacher is encouraged to attend these activities as well.

Through the GLP Alumni Mandarin program, students continue to be exposed to language through content. The emphasis is on learning through interactive activities such as arts or drama, physical activities, music, games, and more.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Teaches students Mandarin through dynamic, “cool” lesson plans in after-school setting
• Collaborates with program coordinator to plan relevant field trips
• Assists visitors to classroom in incorporating level-appropriate Mandarin
• Communicates with supervisors, parents, students and partner school
• Effectively manages classroom
• Enhances program by exploring creative and innovative teaching and learning tools

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

• Experience with world language instruction and curriculum development
• Advanced or near-native fluency in Mandarin
• Out-of-the-box thinking
• Experience working with upper elementary and/or middle school students
• Experience working with students with diverse backgrounds
• Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate instruction
• Excellent classroom management skills
• Success in incorporating hands-on and co-operative learning activities
• Willingness to grow professionally

Salary: $25-$30/hour
