In some communities there is a family tradition of telling stories and the role of intergenerational experiences in fostering a child’s enjoyment of stories are key for child’s language and literacy development. As part of this talk I will share how the native language and biliteracy of young children in a Mexican (Spanish-Náhuatl) community have been supported through “Community Literacy Canastas.”

The purpose of the Community Literacy Canastas project was to invite and engage children, families, and teachers to participate and create stories around common and relevant themes for families. The objective was to share these stories, in Spanish or in the native indigenous language, so the families and children can share them with teachers.
